The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) was formed under the Company Secretaries Act, 1980 to develop and regulate the profession of company secretaries in India. The origins of the profession can be traced back to the 1960s, when the Company Law Board started the Company Secretary Course and the Government Diploma in Company Secretaryship. The Institute of Company Secretaries of India was formed in 1969 under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956 due to the massive increase in the number of company secretaries.
